A child beauty contest in Colombia, called 'Miss Tanguita' has generated outrage and controversy in this country after eight years girls parade in swimwear.
In that contest, organized on Sunday in the town of Barbosa (Santander), the children were presented in bikini before hundreds of attendees at the Festival del Río Suárez, who performed for over 20 years.
"I've never forced the girls to make inappropriate or vulgar acts. We are simply promoting the defense of the body, body care, "said Rocío Galeano, mayor of the municipality of Barbosa to a local station about Miss Tanguita.
The contest, according to the official, was made with the consent of the parents. "It is giving children the importance they deserve, understand them, include them in all cultural and sports activities we do," Galeano defended.
But most critics for Miss Tanguita came from social networks. After the announcement, users quickly became the subject trend in Colombia. Most messages were generated against local authorities, accusing them of inciting child prostitution.
The director of the Colombian Institute of Family Welfare (ICBF) called "violation of children's rights" to children gateway. He also announced that since its institution "appropriate action" will be taken against the organizers and parents.
